Conclusion

Most of the riots described here had been of short duration, involving a relatively small number of people — the exception being the Gordon Riots. In most, the forces of law and order, once roused, were effective in restoring order; although, of course, in two cases, they were arguably the cause of turning a peaceful political protest into a violent encounter. London can often be a violent city — as can many others — but the instances of mass public disturbances are rare, which is probably why they cause so much alarm. Rarer were the Jacobite threat of 1745 and the bombings of the nineteenth century. The first was greeted with defiance and a demonstration of solidarity with the status quo. The second was met with sympathy among Londoners and a rallying of many Irish Londoners to pledge their loyalty to the Queen and against the terrorists.
